The Michigan Union, which is in the final months of a 20-month $85.2 million renovation, will reopen on January 13, 2020. The occasion will be marked with a reopening celebration with remarks from key leaders, performances and an open house.
“We are very excited for everyone to see the beautiful results of the Michigan Union renovation,” said Susan Pile, senior director of University Unions and Auxiliary Services. “I imagine the campus community will be very proud of the newly renovated building. From the input of the earliest student committees to the contractors and construction crews to the staff who smoothly transitioned the space, it was a community effort with results we will cherish for years to come.”
Doors open for the January 13 celebration at 11:30 a.m., with remarks following at 12 p.m. The first 500 guests to enter will receive a special commemorative give-a-way. An open house and tours of the renovated facility will take place from 1 until 4 p.m.
The renovation -- designed to help the university meet the needs of current and future students -- honors the historic architectural integrity of the Union and includes significant infrastructure and technology upgrades. It also includes enhanced program and social space; expanded meeting options; and a newly created IdeaHub, state-of-the-art student organization space.
The project also provided deep infrastructure renewal including life safety, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing system improvements; elevator replacements and upgrades; replacement of the roof and restoration and replacement of windows; interior finish upgrades on floors one through four; and restroom upgrades. The Michigan Union’s North Entrance also was redesigned to become a more welcoming, open and light-infused entrance with an enclosed ramp.
